Why practice with paragraphs?

Random-word tests are great for raw speed, but they skip the hard parts of everyday typing: the Shift key, punctuation and numbers. Paragraph practice trains all of them, and following a story keeps your eyes reading ahead, which is one of the habits that makes fast typists fast.

All the paragraphs below were written for this site. Start with the easy ones and move up when you can type them at 95% accuracy or better.

Easy paragraphs for beginners

Short, common words and simple sentences.

A Morning Walk

The sun was up and the air was cool. I took the dog for a walk down to the river. We saw a duck and two small fish. The dog ran in the grass and then sat by my feet. It was a good start to the day, and we were home in time for tea.

Rainy Day Plans

It rained all day, so we stayed in. Mom made soup and we read books on the rug. My brother built a fort with every pillow in the house. When the rain stopped, we put on our boots and jumped in every puddle on the street until our socks were wet.

The Garden Shed

Grandpa keeps his tools in a green shed at the end of the garden. There is a rake, a spade, a hose and a jar full of old seeds. He says each tool has a job and each job has a time. In spring we dig. In summer we water. In fall we rake the leaves into a big pile.

Medium paragraphs and short stories

Longer words, commas and a story to follow.

Our First Computer

The computer arrived in a box almost as big as my little sister. It had a beige case, a heavy monitor and a keyboard that clicked loudly with every key. Dad spent the whole evening reading the manual, while we waited to play the one game it came with. The modem made a strange screeching noise each time it dialed in, and nobody could use the phone while we were online.

The Lighthouse Keeper

For thirty years, Mara climbed the spiral stairs of the lighthouse every evening at dusk. She polished the great lens, trimmed the wick and wrote the weather in a leather logbook. Storms rattled the windows, and fog sometimes hid the sea for days. Still, the light never failed. Sailors who had never met her trusted her completely, because her lamp was always burning.

Baking Simple Bread

Good bread needs only four things: flour, water, salt and yeast. Mix them in a large bowl until the dough comes together, then knead it for about ten minutes until it feels smooth and springy. Cover the bowl and let the dough rise somewhere warm. After an hour or two, shape it into a loaf, let it rise again, and bake it until the crust is deep golden brown.

Reading the Night Sky

On a clear night far from city lights, thousands of stars become visible. Long before maps and compasses, travelers used them to find their way. The stars seem to turn slowly around a single point in the sky, which helps you find north. Learning just a few bright patterns is enough to start, and once you know them, the night sky starts to feel like an old friend.

The School Trip

Our class visited the science museum on a Tuesday. We saw a giant model of the heart, a room full of mirrors and a machine that made sparks jump between two metal balls. Our teacher counted us at every door to make sure nobody got lost. On the bus home, everyone argued about which room was the best, and nobody could agree.

Capitals, digits, dates and punctuation, like real office typing.

An Office Memo

To all staff: the third-floor printer (model LX-450) will be replaced on Friday, March 14. Please save any open documents before 9:30 a.m., when the old unit is disconnected. The new printer supports double-sided printing by default; if you need single-sided copies, change the setting under File > Print > Options. Questions? Contact the help desk at extension 2207.

A Packing List

For the 5-day trip, pack: 2 pairs of hiking boots, 6 pairs of socks, 1 rain jacket, a first-aid kit, and enough water for at least 3 liters per person per day. Don't forget the map (scale 1:25,000), a compass, and spare batteries. The trail is 42.5 km long, with an elevation gain of roughly 1,800 m, so plan for 6 to 8 hours of walking each day.

The Accidental Invention

Many famous inventions began as mistakes. A cook who added too much of one ingredient, a chemist who forgot to clean a dish, or an engineer who noticed something odd in a failed test could all stumble onto something remarkable. The trick wasn't luck alone; it was curiosity. Instead of throwing the "failure" away, they asked a simple question: why did that happen?
