Learn to Type: Free Typing Lessons

Six short touch-typing lessons take you from the home row to capitals, numbers and punctuation. Each lesson only uses keys you have already learned, and the on-screen keyboard shows which finger to use next.

How to learn to type

  1. Find the home row. Put your left fingers on A S D F and your right fingers on J K L ;. The small bumps on F and J let you find them without looking. See the finger placement chart for every key.
  2. Learn one row at a time. Work through the lessons below in order. Repeat a lesson until you can finish it without looking down, at 95% accuracy or better.
  3. Keep your eyes on the screen. It feels slow at first. That's normal: you are replacing the habit of looking with memory in your fingers.
  4. Practice a little every day. Ten to fifteen minutes a day works better than one long session a week.
  5. Then build speed. Once all the keys feel familiar, take the typing test and play the typing games.

How long does it take to learn to type?

It depends on how much you practice and what habits you start with. With short daily practice, most people can find every key without looking within a few weeks; speed keeps improving for months after that. If you already type with two fingers, expect to be slower for a little while before touch typing overtakes your old speed.

Typing lessons for kids and homeschool

These lessons work well for children who can read simple words. Keep sessions short, around ten minutes, and celebrate accuracy rather than speed. Mixing a lesson with a game like Dinosaur Typing or Frog Typing keeps practice fun. Everything is free, needs no account, and nothing a child types is stored or sent anywhere.
