Why typing code is different
Prose is mostly letters and spaces. Code puts symbols such as { } ( ) [ ] < > = ; " ' in nearly every line, and most of them need Shift or a stretch with the little finger. Many developers type prose quickly but slow down a lot on symbols, so practicing them directly pays off.
In this test, line breaks and indentation are typed as single spaces, so you can focus on the symbols themselves.
Tips for typing code faster
- Learn the right finger for each symbol. Brackets, quotes and semicolons belong to the right little finger; the finger placement chart shows them all.
- Type matching pairs, ( ) and { }, as one quick movement.
- Use the opposite hand's Shift for symbols, as with capitals.
- Accuracy matters even more than in prose: one missing character can break a program.
