3 Minute Typing Test

Three minutes is long enough to show your real, steady typing speed, and short enough to take on a coffee break. The test below starts at 3 minutes; switch to 1 or 5 minutes any time.

Why take a 3 minute typing test?

A 15- or 30-second test mostly measures a burst: you can hold your breath and sprint. Over three minutes, small habits start to matter. Hesitations, reaching for the wrong key and fixing typos all add up, so the result is closer to how fast you type an email or a report on a normal day.

That is also why many job application typing tests run for a few minutes rather than a few seconds. If you are preparing for one, practicing at the same length means there are no surprises on the day.

What to expect from your score

Most people score a little lower on a 3-minute test than on a 1-minute one, typically by a few WPM. That is normal: concentration dips and small errors build up. If your 3-minute score is much lower than your 1-minute score, stamina rather than finger speed is what to work on.

Your result shows net WPM (correct characters only), accuracy and errors. Every wrong keystroke counts as an error, even one you fixed. See how WPM is calculated for the details.

Tips for a better 3 minute result

  • Start at a pace you can hold. Going all out in the first 20 seconds usually leads to a burst of mistakes later.
  • Don't chase every typo. Fix the word you are on, then move on. Once you press space, the word is locked anyway.
  • Keep breathing and relax your shoulders. Tension slows your fingers down as the minutes pass.
  • Practice the length you will be tested on. Take two or three 3-minute tests in a row and look at your average, not your best run.
