What a data entry typing test measures
Data entry tests are usually alphanumeric: a mix of letters, numbers and punctuation copied exactly as written. Employers care about accuracy at least as much as speed, because a single wrong digit in an order number or amount can cause real problems. Results are reported in words per minute or keystrokes per hour, often with a minimum accuracy.
The records here are made up for practice: they don't describe real people or businesses. Each test generates a fresh set.
Words per minute and keystrokes per hour
Your result here is in WPM. To compare with a job listing in keystrokes per hour, multiply by 300 (five keystrokes per word, sixty minutes per hour), or use the WPM and KPH calculator. For number-only tests, practice on the 10-key typing test.
Tips for data entry tests
- Copy exactly: capitals, commas, periods and the dollar sign all have to match.
- Slow down slightly on numbers; a wrong digit is harder to spot than a wrong letter.
- Use both Shift keys, and the opposite hand for each capital.
- Practice at the length of the real test. Three and five minutes are common.
