Why practice one hand at a time?

  • Find your weaker hand. Most typists are noticeably slower with one hand. Practicing it on its own evens things out.
  • Right-hand typing practice. Many common words lean on the left hand, so the right hand often gets less practice. This test gives it words of its own.
  • Typing with an injured hand or while holding something. One-handed practice keeps you productive.

Which keys belong to each hand?

HandLetter keysExample words
LeftQ W E R T, A S D F G, Z X C V Bwere, great, street, sweater
RightY U I O P, H J K L, N Myou, only, pink, opinion

The split follows standard touch typing. See the full finger placement chart for every key.

Tips for one-handed typing

  • Keep the other hand on the home row anyway, so your typing hand stays in position.
  • Use the normal finger for each key. Don't let one finger do all the work.
  • If you need to type one-handed long term, look into one-handed keyboard layouts and tools, which rearrange keys for a single hand.
